About Gen IX Capture Mechanics
In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the capture formula is:
X = (((3M - 2H) * G * C * B * BP) / (3M)) * L * S * D where:
- M: Pokémon's max HP (percentage)
- H: Pokémon's current HP (percentage)
- G: Grass modifier (usually 1)
- C: Base catch rate of the Pokémon (modified by Heavy Ball)
- B: Ball bonus (based on the type of ball and conditions)
- BP: Badge penalty (makes higher level Pokémon harder to catch)
- L: Low-level modifier (bonus for low-level Pokémon)
- S: Status bonus (2.5× for sleep/frozen, 1.5× for other status conditions, 1× for none)
- D: Difficulty modifier (for Tera Raids, though these are always caught)
There are also special cases: Master Ball always captures, and Pokémon caught in Tera Raids are guaranteed catches.
The Badge Penalty is a new mechanic in Gen IX that makes higher level Pokémon harder to catch based on the number of badges you have.
