About Gen VIII Capture Mechanics

In Gen VIII, the capture formula is:

X = (((3M - 2H) * G * C * B) / (3M)) * L * S * D where:

M: Pokémon's max HP
H: Pokémon's current HP
G: Grass modifier (usually 1)
C: Base catch rate of the Pokémon (modified by Heavy Ball)
B: Ball bonus (based on the type of ball and conditions)
L: New low-level modifier (makes low-level Pokémon easier to catch)
S: Status bonus (2.5 for sleep/frozen, 1.5 for other status conditions, 1 for none)
D: New difficulty modifier (for raid battles and dark grass encounters)

Gen VIII introduces two new modifiers:

Low-level modifier (L): Ranges from 1 to about 2.5 for very low-level Pokémon
Difficulty modifier (D): Makes catches harder in dark/glowing grass (0.5) and in Max Raids (varies by rating)

There are also special cases: Master Ball always captures, and captures are guaranteed on Route 1.

Note: In Sword/Shield, if a Pokémon is above your level cap based on gym badges, you can't throw balls at all.
